Privacy Policy

Last updated: March 22, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how SnapySplit ("we," "us," or "our") collects, uses, shares, and protects your personal information when you use the SnapySplit mobile application and visit our website at snapysplit.app (collectively, the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

SnapySplit is a free bill-splitting app that uses AI-powered optical character recognition (OCR) to scan receipts, split bills among groups, and send payment reminders. We are committed to protecting your personal information and being transparent about how we handle it.

1. Information We Collect

We collect the following categories of information to provide, maintain, and improve the Service:

Personal Information You Provide

  • Account information: Your name, email address, phone number, and profile details when you create an account.
  • Receipt images: Photos of receipts you scan using our AI-powered OCR feature. These images are processed to extract item names, prices, quantities, tax, and tip information.
  • Group and split data: Information about groups you create, group member names, how bills are split among members, and payment statuses.
  • Payment links: Links to third-party payment services (such as Venmo, Zelle, or Cash App) that you choose to share with your group members.
  • Contact information for reminders: Phone numbers or messaging details of group members, used to send payment reminders on your behalf.
  • Support communications: Messages, emails, or other communications you send to us when requesting support or providing feedback.

Information Collected Automatically

  • Device information: Device type, model, operating system and version, unique device identifiers, and app version.
  • Usage data: Features used, screens viewed, actions taken within the app, session duration, and interaction patterns.
  • Log data: IP address, access times, error logs, and referring URLs when visiting our website.
  • Camera access: When you use the receipt scanning feature, we access your device camera. We only capture images you explicitly choose to scan.

2. How We Collect Information

  • Directly from you: When you create an account, scan a receipt, create a group, add payment links, or contact support.
  • Automatically: Through analytics tools, server logs, and device-level data collection when you use the app or visit our website.
  • From other users: When another SnapySplit user adds your name, phone number, or email to a group for bill splitting.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect for the following specific purposes:

  • Receipt processing: Analyze receipt images using AI/OCR to extract line items, prices, tax, and tip so bills can be split accurately.
  • Bill splitting: Calculate each group member's share based on the items they selected and any shared costs.
  • Payment reminders: Send text messages or push notifications to group members on your behalf reminding them of outstanding balances.
  • Payment link sharing: Facilitate sharing of your preferred payment platform links (Venmo, Zelle, Cash App) with group members.
  • Service improvement: Analyze usage patterns to identify features that users find confusing and prioritize improvements. Improve AI/OCR accuracy by reviewing aggregated, anonymized scan performance metrics.
  • Account management: Verify your identity, maintain your account, and provide customer support.
  • Service communications: Send account verification, security alerts, and important service updates.
  • Security and fraud prevention: Detect and prevent fraudulent activity, abuse, or unauthorized access to the Service.
  • Legal compliance: Comply with applicable laws, regulations, and legal processes.

4. Legal Basis for Processing

We process your personal information based on the following legal grounds:

  • Performance of our service: Processing your receipt images, managing groups, and facilitating bill splits is necessary to provide you with the core SnapySplit service.
  • Your consent: We obtain your permission before accessing your camera, sending payment reminders on your behalf, and collecting certain data.
  • Legitimate interests: We analyze aggregated usage data to improve app performance, enhance OCR accuracy, and develop new features, where these interests do not override your privacy rights.
  • Legal obligations: We may process data when required to comply with applicable laws, court orders, or regulatory requirements.

5. Data Sharing and Third Parties

We share your information only in the following limited circumstances:

  • With your group members: When you create or join a group, other members can see your name, your assigned items, your share amount, and any payment links you choose to share.
  • Cloud infrastructure providers: We use trusted cloud hosting providers to securely store and process your data. These providers act as data processors on our behalf and are contractually obligated to protect your information.
  • Analytics providers: We use analytics services to understand how the app is used in aggregate. This data is anonymized and does not personally identify you.
  • Payment platforms: We facilitate sharing links to services like Venmo, Zelle, and Cash App. We do not process payments directly and never have access to your payment credentials or financial account details on those platforms.
  • Legal requirements: We may disclose information if required by law, subpoena, court order, or government request, or to protect the rights, safety, or property of SnapySplit, our users, or the public.
  • Business transfers: In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred as part of that transaction. We will notify you before your data becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

Each third-party service operates under its own privacy policy. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party services you interact with through SnapySplit.

6. We Do Not Sell Your Data

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties for monetary or other valuable consideration. We do not share your data with third parties for their advertising or marketing purposes. Your receipt data, group information, and payment details are yours — we only use them to provide and improve the SnapySplit service.

7. Data Retention

We retain your information only as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy:

  • Account data: Retained for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymize your personal data within 30 days, except where retention is required by law.
  • Receipt images: Processed by our AI systems and not retained longer than necessary to provide the service. You can delete your receipt history at any time from within the app.
  • Group and split data: Retained while the associated group is active. You can delete groups and their data from within the app.
  • Usage and analytics data: Retained in aggregated, anonymized form for up to 24 months to support service improvement.
  • Support communications: Retained for up to 12 months after resolution to improve our support quality.

8. Data Storage and Security

We implement industry-standard technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information:

  • Encryption: All data is encrypted in transit (TLS/SSL) and at rest on our servers.
  • Access controls: Strict role-based access controls limit who within our team can access personal data, on a need-to-know basis.
  • Secure infrastructure: We use reputable cloud providers with SOC 2 and ISO 27001 certified data centers located in the United States.
  • Regular reviews: We periodically review and update our security practices to address new threats.

While no method of electronic storage or transmission is 100% secure, we take commercially reasonable steps to protect your information from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. If we become aware of a security breach affecting your data, we will notify you in accordance with applicable law.
